About
My initial interest in physiotherapy started when I experienced my first long-standing injury and required soft tissue therapy to relieve the pain. Following this, I became curious to further understand injury diagnosis and different treatment approaches.
In 2013, I started my degree in Sports Rehabilitation at St Mary’s University. In June 2014, I gained my Level 4 Sports Massage qualification, with the addition of pregnancy massage. In June 2014, Gemma Bigg Sports Massage first opened for business. I successfully graduated from university in July 2016 with a BSc (Hons) in Sports Rehabilitation, with accreditation from BASRaT.
Following this, I gained a role as a therapy assistant in my local hospital, working alongside physiotherapists. I then went on to complete my Physiotherapy degree at the University of Southampton, graduating in 2020. I officially gained my registration in August 2020 after working on a temporary COVID-19 emergency registration and leaving university early to support the pandemic. I spent a further five years in the NHS working in elderly care, critical care, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and MSK outpatients.
I have had the opportunity to work in elite sport with international rugby teams (the All Blacks, Springboks, and Argentina), as well as GB triathletes and runners. Other sports I have worked with include rugby, cycling, gymnastics, football, swimming, and bodybuilding.
I have also worked at various sporting events, including St Michael’s Hospice Big Wheel, Hampshire Hoppit, Thames Path Challenge, London MoonWalk, Endure24, and London Men’s Survival of the Fittest.
